PROGRAM AREA: ALIGNING PHILANTHROPY

Advancing a model of solidarity philanthropy

For a sector that seeks to do good, philanthropy can cause harm and undermine our own missions through:

  • Grantmaking practices that are opaque and extractive

  • Grantmaking strategy that is top-down, risk averse, and focused on symptoms and metrics

  • Grants that are short term and restricted, and often go to large, white-led organizations in the Global North

  • Foundations that operate in black boxes and uncoordinated siloes

  • Foundations that hoard wealth, spending only 5% of their assets and leaving the other 95% in harmful investments that directly contradict their grantmaking

Through both our own practices and through grantmaking and organizing, CS Fund seeks to instead align philanthropy in solidarity with our movement parters.

Mission

To shift philanthropic priorities and approaches in order to increase resources for the grantees, movements, and communities advancing systemic change.

Vision

  • Grantmaking practices are trust based and responsive

  • Grantmaking strategy is informed by frontline communities and grassroots movements and focused on power building and systems change

  • Grants are long term and unrestricted, and often go to underrepresented groups in the US and Global South

  • Foundations share knowledge and take collective action

  • Foundations spend more on grantmaking and organizing and align their investments with their mission and values

Geography

This program makes grants in the US.
